The famous no.3440 City of Truro at Roebuck Farm, 18 Mar 2005. [2] This is the locomotive that was timed at 102.3 mph on 9 May 1904 while hauling an ocean mails special. Withdrawn in 1931, City of Truro was preserved at York until 1957 when it was returned to working order at Swindon for use on special trains, but was also used on service trains when required. Final withdrawal came in 1961 and the locomotive went to the GWR museum in Swindon where it remained until restoration in 1985. It was fully refurbished at the NRM York in time for the 100th anniversary of its 1904 run, and will be visiting different railways throughout 2005.
