Castle class 4-6-0 no. 5051 Earl Bathurst leaving Lydeard, 18 Mar 2005 [2]. The 4-cylinder Castles, designed by C.B Collett in 1923, were an enlarged version of Churchward’s earlier Star class. A total of 179 were built at Swindon works, the last one appearing in 1950. Most were named after castles, this example being one of the exceptions, part of a group built in 1936/7 and named after earls. |
