No. 143 taking water at Caernarfon. The Garratt type, invented by H.W.Garratt in the early 20th century, has a central frame carrying the boiler and cab suspended between two power units which also carry the water and fuel supplies. This allows a larger boiler than on a conventional loco, and being articulated the Garratt can negotiate tight curves.
