The 2ft gauge Vale of Rheidol line runs from the Welsh seaside town of Aberystwyth for almost 12 miles to Devils Bridge. Opened in 1902, it was built to carry minerals but began carrying passenger traffic later the same year. It was taken over ny the Cambrian in 1913, the GWR in 1923 and was nationalised in 1948, becoming the last narrow gauge line operated by British Rail, still using steam locomotives long after the end of steam on the rest of BR in 1968. In 1989 the railway became the first part of BR to be privatised.
