The Talyllyn Railway is a narrow gauge [2ft 3in] line which runs from Tywyn on the Mid Wales coast up the Fathew valley to Nant Gwernol, a distance of about 7 miles. Opened in 1865 to carry slate from the Bryn Eglwys quarry to the Cambrian main line at Tywyn, the line somehow escaped the Grouping of 1922 and nationalisation in 1948 and was still operating in a very run down condition when the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society, led by author Tom Rolt, took over making the Talyllyn the first railway in the world to be preserved by volunteers.. The railway still runs its original 1865 engines and coaches.
