Ex LMS Crab 2-6-0 no.42765 arriving at Kidderminster, 21 Sep 2001. This type of locomotive was introduced in 1926 for mixed traffic duties. The designer was George Hughes, former Chief Mechanical Engineer of the L & YR, but the first one was not completed until after his retirement, with some Midland-style modifications [such as the narrow tender] by his successor Sir Henry Fowler. They were nicknamed Crabs because the high running plate, inclined cylinders and exposed valve gear gave them a crab-like appearance. |
