The only surviving LNWR 0-8-0, class G2 [or “Super D”] no.49395, entered service on the Churnet Valley in July 2005. The Super D is owned by the National Railway Museum and the restoration project, financed by Pete Waterman in return for having use of the locomotive, has taken more than 12 years. The G2 class was the final development of the 0-8-0 type goods engine on the LNWR, this example being built at Crewe in1921. As they were similar to the older D class engines but fitted with larger boilers and superheaters, they became known as “Super D’s”. No.49395 was withdrawn by BR in 1959 after a failure that resulted in buckled valve gear and a cracked cylinder block. It was selected for preservation as a static exhibit and was never expected to run again. These pictures were taken on its first weekend in service. Click on the thumbnails for pics and more info. |
