Stroudley “Terrier” no.11 Newport was built by the LBSCR in 1878 as no 40 Brighton, and won a gold medal at the Paris exhibition of that year. The loco was bought by the Isle of Wight Central in 1901 and renamed Newport by the SR in 1923. It returned to the mainland in 1947,was withdrawn in 1963 and after ten years on display at Butlins came back to the island, finally returning to steam in 1989. Like Calbourne, Newport is out of service awaiting overhaul. Pictured at Havenstreet, 18 Sep 2003. |
