A1X class 0-6-0T no 55 “Stepney”, shunting at Horsted Keynes on 20 Sep 2003. Built in 1875 by the LBSCR at Brighton to the design of William Stroudley, these little engines were nicknamed Terriers, and because of their light weight they survived on lightly laid branch lines until the early 1960s. This one was purchased from BR in working order and arrived on the Bluebell under its own steam in 1960. It is painted in “Stroudley’s Improved Engine Green”, which suggests that Stroudley was colourblind!
